Ahhh… the silence.
Big Dude is at school and Daddy has an unexpected day off so he’s taken Little Dude and the visiting in-laws out on an ‘adventure.’ I have the whole place to myself. The bathtub is calling my name. So is the couch. My stack of books by the bed is teasing me with coy glances. Even the coffee pot seems to be singing a siren call. How tempting it is to just revel in the silence.
However… after a summer nearly all on vacation from work I need to get back at it. The problem is, after so long out of the office, there are no deadlines looming. There is just the ever present need to keep marketing myself and find work. Curling up with a good book sounds ever so much more tempting.
I find this the biggest challenge of working at home and raising kids. The rest of my schedule leaves me so tired that the precious few hours of silence I get seem to luxurious to give over to work. Today I am going to try something different. I’ve been reading The Wealthy Freelancer: 12 Secrets to a Great Income and an Enviable Lifestyle. I’m desperate to find some method of keeping focus long enough to get some work done. Today is the day of the ’50 Minute Focus.’ I’m tuning out of my e-mail and phone and all the other distraction to focus solely on work. I set the timer for 50 minutes and just start working. It is similar to http://www.flylady.net/ and her 15 minute de-cluttering system. It is about no distractions and just knuckling down and getting it down.
Once I press the ‘publish’ button on the blog I’m tuning out for 50 minutes… I’m sure Facebook will miss me desperately!
