Martha Stewart Doesn’t Live Here…. Today.

The Christmas shopping is done! It’s only the 17th of December and I have nothing more to buy… I hope.

My problem when it comes to the holidays has always been overkill. Everything on my shopping list is ticked off and ready to be wrapped but now I keep coming up with more ideas… I like the giving side of Christmas so much that I want to give more.

It’s genetic, I think. My mother wondered yesterday whether I was getting stressed out about the Christmas party we’ve having here tomorrow. I can honestly say I was not… and am still not, but the women in my family tend to go a bit overboard when it comes to entertaining… and they get the anxiety that results from trying to make it perfect.

My goal this year is to avoid all that. We haven’t thrown a Christmas party in years but, this year, with all that has been going on I really needed some Christmas cheer… hence the party. That said, I have also promised not to go overboard. That’s going to be the challenge.

I am serving some food, but am trying to keep the amount small. I am offering some non-alcoholic drinks but have asked people to bring whatever else they might to drink. For me, that’s making headway. The cleaning required to make the house look presentable is a little overwhelming but that’s another story.

The state of my house may not be ready for a party but the state of my mind is… for those of you attending all I ask is not to expect too much… there may be a dirty floor and there may be a fancy spread on the table…. who knows what will happen. Just drink up and have fun, beyond that I make no promises.

They come to see you, not your house, right? Just keep telling yourself that over and over when you feel a perfectionist attack coming on.

My philosophy is "If you're coming to see us, come in. If you're coming to see the house call 3 weeks ahead." Clean the bathrooms and the obvious things. Clear the dust or leave instructions not to leave the date, but initials are fine. You DO need some Christmas cheer. Hugs and merry Christmas from our house to yours.Lisa, Dave and Laura

Mission accomplished! I had one night of relatively low stress and alot of Christmas cheer. I did resort to a fairly eloborate food spread but the windows were left with smudgy fingerprints and the floors were partially unwashed. We had fun and were distracted from the chaos for one night and I feel good. We'll have to do it again next year.
