Suddenly not a fan of Grey’s Anatomy.

It’s past 11 o’clock at night. I’m wide awake with no thoughts of bed any time soon… I seem to have turned to a glass of wine to calm my shaky nerves.

What has me in this state?

I’m very sorry to say it is a TV show.

I watched the two hour season finale of Grey’s Anatomy this evening. I’m not sure I’ll ever be watching it again. The level of violence was, simply, shocking. Not 10 minutes into the show a doctor was shot, point blank, in the forehead. My soon-to-be 16 year old step-girl was sitting right next to me.

I’m not sure sure what was more disturbing: the escalating violence or the smile on The Girl’s face and the statement from her when the show went to commercial that ‘this is going to be a good one.’

I don’t know if it is becoming a parent, living a military life or just getting older, but I find I am much more sensitive to violence on the screen. I’ve always loved a good action movie and I read murder mysteries but the graphic nature of the violence depicted on the screen is disturbing.

I can’t watch shows like Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, which depict in graphic, disgusting detail a horrible fate for unsuspecting women and children. Now I find the hospital drama I used to not let The Girl watch because of its sexual content is doing the same thing.

The Girl went to bed halfway through the show and I truly don’t know if I am willing to let her watch the rest. If I don’t, she’ll be pissed, but I can’t imagine letting her sit through 2 hours of that concentrated fear and violence.

What does the depiction of this level of violence say about our society? What does it say to victims, and the parents of victims, of school shootings? The school Big Dude will start next year does lock down drills. What does all of this say about the world we live in?

I’m a writer. I’m all for freedom of expression. I know I have a right to turn the TV off. I know I can tell The Girl she is not allowed to watch.

This was also prime time TV. It’s a show about doctors and relationships. I could not have foreseen the cold-blooded murder 5 minutes into The Girl’s favorite show.

I’m not advocating censorship… I don’t even know what I am advocating. The show did make a point to make a small comment about how easy it is to buy guns and ammunition in the U.S. but one minute out of 120 minutes of blood and guns is no excuse.

All I know if that it’s nearly midnight and I’m no where near sleep. I’m jittery and can’t get the images of that violence out of my head. It wasn’t real but it was compelling and that’s close enough.

I never watched the show, but you are echoing comments I heard a great deal in the Twitterverse.I used to watch Criminal Minds, but I won't watch it if there is a child involved. I won't watch Law and Order SVU either. I like NCIS and NCIS LA because the violence is usually in the first 2 minutes, and then it's solving it from then on. Can someone not bring back Carol Burnett? I think the world needs more laughter and less graphic violence.

I couldn't believe it as well! It was absolutely shocking.
